Bread and Main Ingredients
- 4 thick slices of rustic or sourdough bread
- 8 slices of thinly sliced flavorful ham
- 2 cups grated Gruyère cheese (freshly grated recommended)
- 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 2 tbsp butter (for toasting and béchamel sauce)
Béchamel Sauce
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for gluten-free version)
- 1 1/4 cups warm milk (or dairy-free milk alternative)
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- A pinch of nutmeg
Instructions
- Prepare the béchamel sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in flour to create a smooth roux, then gradually whisk in warm milk to avoid lumps. Continue cooking until the sauce thickens to a creamy consistency. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg for a classic French flavor.
- Toast the bread: Lightly butter one side of each bread slice. Toast the bread in a skillet or oven until the buttered side is golden and crispy, creating a crunchy base for the toppings.
- Layer the ham and cheese: Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the untoasted side of each bread slice. Layer ham slices evenly, then generously sprinkle grated Gruyère cheese on top.
- Assemble and bake: Place the open-faced sandwiches on a baking sheet. Pour the béchamel sauce evenly over the top, then sprinkle extra grated cheese if desired. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 10-15 minutes until the cheese bubbles and turns golden brown.
- Serve warm: Allow the toast to cool slightly so the cheese sets enough for easy slicing, while remaining gooey and delicious. Garnish with fresh herbs like thyme or chives if desired, and serve immediately.
Notes
- Use freshly grated Gruyère cheese for optimal melting and texture; pre-grated cheese may contain additives that affect melting.
- Do not skip the béchamel sauce as it adds creamy richness and moisture essential to the dish.
- Keep an eye on the toast while baking to prevent the cheese from burning; aim for a perfectly golden top.
- Use warm or room temperature milk when making béchamel to prevent lumps.
- Experiment with different breads like rye, ciabatta, or multigrain to vary texture and flavor.
