Ingredients
Scale
Fruit
- 1 lb fresh ripe strawberries, washed, hulled, and thinly sliced
- 1–2 tablespoons sugar (for tossing with strawberries)
Whipped Cream
- 1 cup chilled heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Cake Layers
- About 6–8 oz cake of choice (angel food cake, pound cake, or classic shortcakes), cut into bite-sized cubes
Instructions
- Prepare Fresh Strawberries: Wash and hull the strawberries, then slice them thinly. Toss the slices with 1-2 tablespoons of sugar to bring out their natural juices. Let them sit for 10-15 minutes to macerate.
- Whip the Cream: Using a chilled bowl and beaters, whip 1 cup of cold heavy cream with 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until soft peaks form. This will add a light and sweet texture to the trifles.
- Cut the Cake into Cubes: Select your preferred cake base such as angel food cake, pound cake, or classic shortcakes, and cut it into bite-sized cubes that fit well in your serving glasses.
- Layer the Trifles: In clear glasses or jars, begin layering with a portion of cake cubes, followed by a spoonful of the sugared strawberries with their syrup, and then a generous dollop of whipped cream. Repeat these layers until you reach the top of the container. Finish with whipped cream and garnish with a few whole strawberries.
- Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the assembled trifles for at least 1 hour to allow flavors to meld and for the cake to soften slightly, creating a melt-in-your-mouth experience. Serve chilled.
Notes
- Use room temperature cake cubes to absorb strawberry juices evenly without becoming mushy.
- Chill mixing tools before whipping cream for perfect soft peaks.
- Do not over-sweeten strawberries to let their natural flavor shine.
- Use clear glasses for an attractive presentation of the layers.
- Prepare the trifles up to 24 hours in advance and keep refrigerated for best flavor melding.
