Ingredients
Scale
For the Patties
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs (or almond flour for low-carb)
- 1/4 cup finely diced onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
For the Gravy
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1/2 cup sliced onion
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for gluten-free)
- 2 cups beef broth
- Optional herbs: thyme or parsley, to taste
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, finely diced onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently just until combined to keep patties tender. Shape into oval patties about three-quarters of an inch thick and set aside.
- Brown the Patties: Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add patties and cook about 4 minutes per side until browned but not fully cooked through. Remove patties and set aside on a plate.
- Sauté Vegetables: In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and onions. Sauté until they release moisture and turn golden brown, forming the base of the gravy.
- Make the Gravy: Sprinkle the sautéed vegetables with flour, stirring constantly to eliminate the raw taste. Gradually whisk in beef broth and simmer gently until gravy thickens to desired consistency. Season with salt, pepper, and optional herbs.
- Combine and Simmer: Return patties to the skillet, nestling them in the gravy. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10–15 minutes to cook patties through and absorb flavors.
Notes
- Don’t overwork the meat to keep patties tender and juicy.
- Use fresh onions and garlic for best flavor.
- Properly brown the patties to develop deep flavor through caramelization.
- Simmer patties gently in gravy to ensure even cooking and tenderness.
- Adjust gravy thickness with extra broth or flour as needed.
