- 1 large egg

- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- Oil or butter, for browning
For the Mushroom & Onion Gravy
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 8 oz cremini or white mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for GF option)
- 2 cups beef broth, warmed
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Garlic Mashed Potatoes
- 2 lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined to keep the patties tender. Shape into 4-6 oval patties about 1/2 inch thick.
- Brown and Cook the Patties: Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for 3 minutes per side until caramelized. Remove patties and set aside; they will finish cooking in the gravy.
- Sauté Onions and Mushrooms: In the same pan, add sliced onions and mushrooms. Cook over medium heat until onions are translucent and mushrooms are browned, releasing their moisture.
- Make the Gravy: Sprinkle flour over the onions and mushrooms, stirring constantly to form a roux. Slowly whisk in warm beef broth, scraping the pan’s bottom to lift flavorful bits. Cook and stir until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes. Add minced garlic and season with salt and pepper.
- Simmer Patties in Gravy: Return the patties to the skillet, nestle into the gravy. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer gently for 15-20 minutes until patties are cooked through.
- Make Garlic Mashed Potatoes: Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash with butter, minced garlic, milk, salt, and pepper until creamy and smooth.
- Serve it Up: Plate garlic mashed potatoes, arrange Salisbury steak patties beside or on top, and spoon mushroom & onion gravy generously over everything. Garnish with fresh parsley or chopped chives if desired. Enjoy!
Notes
- Don’t overmix the meat to keep patties tender.
- Use warm broth to avoid lumps in gravy.
- Mash potatoes immediately after draining for best texture.
- Let patties rest 10 minutes before browning for better shape.
- Adjust gravy thickness by adding extra broth or flour slurry as needed.
