  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 4-6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Salisbury Steak Patties

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Oil or butter, for browning

For the Mushroom & Onion Gravy

  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 8 oz cremini or white mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for GF option)
  • 2 cups beef broth, warmed
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Garlic Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined to keep the patties tender. Shape into 4-6 oval patties about 1/2 inch thick.
  2. Brown and Cook the Patties: Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for 3 minutes per side until caramelized. Remove patties and set aside; they will finish cooking in the gravy.
  3. Sauté Onions and Mushrooms: In the same pan, add sliced onions and mushrooms. Cook over medium heat until onions are translucent and mushrooms are browned, releasing their moisture.
  4. Make the Gravy: Sprinkle flour over the onions and mushrooms, stirring constantly to form a roux. Slowly whisk in warm beef broth, scraping the pan’s bottom to lift flavorful bits. Cook and stir until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes. Add minced garlic and season with salt and pepper.
  5. Simmer Patties in Gravy: Return the patties to the skillet, nestle into the gravy. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer gently for 15-20 minutes until patties are cooked through.
  6. Make Garlic Mashed Potatoes: Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash with butter, minced garlic, milk, salt, and pepper until creamy and smooth.
  7. Serve it Up: Plate garlic mashed potatoes, arrange Salisbury steak patties beside or on top, and spoon mushroom & onion gravy generously over everything. Garnish with fresh parsley or chopped chives if desired. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the meat to keep patties tender.
  • Use warm broth to avoid lumps in gravy.
  • Mash potatoes immediately after draining for best texture.
  • Let patties rest 10 minutes before browning for better shape.
  • Adjust gravy thickness by adding extra broth or flour slurry as needed.
