Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend for gluten-free option)
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed (or coconut oil for vegan option)
- 1/3 cup pure maple syrup
- 1 large egg (or flaxseed egg for vegan option)
- 1/2 cup milk or cream (almond or oat milk for dairy-free)
Optional Add-ins and Toppings
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
- 1/2 cup dried cranberries or raisins (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon or nutmeg (optional)
- Coarse sugar or extra oats for topping (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt until thoroughly combined. This ensures even distribution and a good rise.
- Cut in the butter: Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, work the chilled, cubed butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, creating a flaky texture.
- Mix the wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the maple syrup, egg, and milk or cream until smooth and fully combined, adding natural sweetness and moisture.
- Combine and form the dough: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and gently fold together until a soft dough forms. Be careful not to overmix to keep the scones tender.
- Shape and cut: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and pat it into a round disk about 1 inch thick. Cut into 8 wedges or use a biscuit cutter for rounds.
- Bake to golden perfection: Place the scones on a lined baking sheet. Brush the tops with a little milk or maple syrup and bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
Notes
- Keep ingredients cold: Chilling butter and liquids helps create flaky layers.
- Don’t overmix the dough to avoid tough scones.
- Use fresh rolled oats rather than quick oats for the best texture.
- Brush with maple syrup before baking for a shiny glaze and extra sweetness.
- Customize toppings by sprinkling coarse sugar or oats on top before baking for texture.
