Ingredients
Scale
Apple Filling
- 6 cups fresh apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, divided
Oat Topping
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (or almond flour for gluten-free)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/3 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small chunks (or coconut oil/vegan butter for vegan option)
Instructions
- Prepare the apples: Peel, core, and slice the apples into even, medium-thick pieces. Toss them in a bowl with lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and half of the brown sugar to coat evenly and prevent browning. Spread this mixture evenly into a greased baking dish.
- Make the oat topping: In a separate bowl, combine rolled oats, flour, remaining brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cut the cold butter into small chunks and mix it into the dry ingredients using your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Assemble and bake: Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish. Place the dish in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, until the topping is golden and the apple juices are bubbling around the edges.
- Cool and serve: Let the apple crisp cool for about 10 minutes to thicken up. Serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for extra indulgence.
Notes
- Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp to ensure the filling stays tender but intact.
- Do not skip the lemon juice; it keeps the apples vibrant and brightens the flavors.
- Use cold butter when preparing the oat topping for the best crumbly, crisp texture.
- Slice apples uniformly for even cooking.
- Allow the crisp to rest slightly before serving so the filling thickens perfectly.
